Comments: The Friday Question

Sounds like cruelty to me.

Our neighbours have two dogs, presumably to keep each other company when they go out. Trouble is the keep each other company by barking, for hours on end some days. Fortunately they only all go out at weekends!

It is cruelty, disgraceful. Whilst an older dog might be quite happy sleeping 10 hours a day a young one will not. We've two Spangles (never could have dogs whilst we both worked full-time) and I hate to leave them for even a couple of hours, and then they have the run of the house...they're generally a pretty active breed so I'd think it will be driven mad pretty quickly if it's in a crate that long every day. Wicked.

thats dreadful:( why do people get animals if they aren't going to be with them? a crate is not at all ideal. i am not a dog person (name is a clue) but it makes me feel sick thinking of this poor creature. and what about training? thats not going to happen is it? bets on how long they keep it before deciding A/ its too messy/ destroys stuff etc
or B/ bored with it

That is dreadful. If my other half worked we wouldn't have a dog because what you have described is cruelty. Stupid, stupid people.

A friend arranged for the local kennels to have her dog during the day while she was working and it was ideal. The dog had lots of company and two good walks a day with other dogs and, since my friend is a teacher, she had her dog at home during the holidays when the kennels was busiest, so was able to negotiate a good rate for the rest of the year. When she did go on holiday, the dog was very happy to go to the kennels.

What is it with putting a dog in a crate nowadays? It's only been the last few years - I think they're cruel under almost any circumstances.
