Mark, erm, yes, I think you are on to something there - there are lots of numbers in Mr BW's Spreadsheet :)

It got warmer and wetter throughout the day and night, which I suspect is the bit which freaked you. All this due to a gale from the southwest, a not infrequent weather event at this time of year.
I'd have thought, what with you being first in line for Much Colder gales from the opposite direction, you might have been glad of it. Provided your roof etc remained intact. And by the time it reached you the worst of the fierceness would have been calmed anyhow!
