I would have guessed city folk would want the green space. If there isn't an empty block then why not a bridge? Well, more and more kids grow up in the city, they go with what they know. Sad. They needed to get out of town more often, maybe?
We have one here on a disused railway bridge and it is lovely. There will always be those who complain about change regardless of whether it brings good or bad. I bet if they looked back at those who wanted to build the High Line in NY (http://www.thehighline.org) there would have been the very same complaints. Now look at it.
