Comments: Horseshoe puzzle

That is smaller and thinner than the more modern shoes. Could it have been made for a pony or a Shetland?
Oh dear lord...I clicked on a dating horse shoes link and it brought me to a site with unclothed women looking for more than a date! Be careful what you click on.

Ask the blacksmith?

BW - I can't comment on your blog for some reason but this link might help towards identifying your horse shoe.

I'm reading it myself and it's fascinating.

I found another site but it may be of more interest to your husband and his metalworking in general.

Trying cut and paste from my blog comments. I have a horrible suspicion it's my computer playing up.

BW - URL removed and I'll try again: this link might help towards identifying your horse shoe.

Debster - haha, he's not a farrier, and there is a difference these days :)

Delcatto - sorry, it's *any* URL - in the URL box, or in the comment. If I could fix it, I would. But I will pull comments with URLs out of spam asap, so don't worry.

Thank you for the info. I've been down the research rabbit hole today too - I found the second link, but not the first, and definitely no p0rn! I did find a copy of an old Shire Album book on old horse shoes (I love those books, shame many are now out of print), which is arriving sometime soon. But I can't believe that horseshoe is as old as t'inter suggests. It does 'feel' old though. And Mr BW went back to the junkyard and rummaged and found some more old horseshoes, including a completely round one. Very exciting!

Delcatto - just checking the link you found that I didn't - it's an upload of the Shire Album book! Brilliant, thanks, now I don't even have to wait for the postie! Still can't quite decide... will have to get a ruler out I think.

Before today, despite knowing a bit about the history of smithing (due to Mr BW's interest in the subject), I had no idea that horses had been shoed for over 1,000 years.

Might be purely decorative; horse shoes are considered to be good luck, hung up correctly.
Or, and this just occurred to me... it might be a form guide. A sort of last?

It's an interesting find, either way.

It's a fascinating book and that the gods there are people interested in such historical ephemera.

I've saved it to look at as well.

Research so far is suggesting it's between 11th and 14th century, as are the other 8 I went back to buy.
Amazing to hold it and realise what it has been through to finish up in an odds' box in a reclaim yard.
