Comments: Bird flu, again, just for a change

Ah, already on Radio 4 just before 7am this morning. Asking people to not handle, but report, any dead wild birds you find.

Ah, you beat me to it Witchy, was going to say I heard that this morning.
I did hear it on the radio last year but can't be sure it wasn't just on farming today.
I think most of the local domestic keepers round here abide by the rules though I'm sure there are some who don't. Last year we had a turkey gobbling and squawking as unhappy about its reduced roaming area....which we could hear from a few hundred yards away across the valley.....I assume she's long gone by now but wonder if they have one for this year about to be rounded up.....

How many outbreaks have there been in the past? I've heard of it from the news before, but never locally. Yes, do mind your hens and good luck.

Lots Scoakat. It comes across with migrating birds from Europe.

The authorities seem now to respond with a countrywide lockdown, rather than just individual areas. There was a 'requirement to house' about 8 or 9 years ago, and one last winter, and an imminent one now. Which makes life very difficult...

With a 40'x14' greenhouse, which has a number of glass panels replaced with mesh, I feel that my girls are quite all right indoors, but I'm going to get some more mesh to cover their outside run (it's wired at present) so that they can go outside safely.

I've heard about it on the internet from friends. But I don't listen to the radio, only to downloaded programmes and I haven't seen an announcement in the newspaper.

Just a quick note to let you know that some folk are still checking in here occasionally (and monitoring posted passwords etc!). I heard today that it's just on Monday 29th that the requirement to house poultry indoors comes in. It was on BBC Radio 4 "Farming Today" this morning. As you suggest, not widely publicized to those who just keep a few hens.

BW writes... Thanks Tim, I only know because I am signed up to APHA bird flu emails. Comments have now auto-closed (it's to stop spam) so I'm having to edit your comment to post. Will hopefully be back en blog sometime soon: the madness that has kept me away is beginning to subside (I hope)...
