Comments: The climate it is a changin'

Yes, I notice it. I had to put the central heating on yesterday evening it was so chilly. And both yesterday and today I put my winter coat on when I went out.

Absolutely. We have lit our log burning stove for the last couple of evenings. Global warming? Who'd have thought it!

It's been duller, and cooler today, but yesterday I was sat out in the garden as usual. It's still too warm tonight.
I'm inclined to think it's a combination of English summer, and maybe your being so much further north this year. Though you were there last summer too, weren't you?

Well, it is probably not due to La Nina, or the imminent collapse of the North Atlantic Current, but there was a large volcanic eruption in Tonga in December 2021, said to be the largest since Krakatoa, which apparently depressed summer temperatures the following year by almost half a degree ...

Sharon, even our neighbour, who has lived here all her life, says it is unseasonably chilly out of the sun.

Yes, definitely. The last four or five years it's been quite warm here in Devon right through until January, and then much colder in February through to say April than previously (the exception being the first lockdown, when it was unsettlingly hot in April). Summer doesn't seem to arrive until much later - it's been 15 degrees here much of this week.

Similar to the last week here Tamsin. And if that is in Devon... When I lived on the Somerset/Devon/Dorset border in the 1980s, summer lasted from April until the end of October. It was rainy sometimes, but warm rain, and it never felt cold.

Even down here nearer the coast it is the same, much chillier than usual. This week, though, seems to have finally seen summer kick in..
