Comments: The joys of old houses

A couple of years back, I travelled for 2.5 hours to buy half a dozen tiles that closely matched the ones in the kitchen (I only needed one, but it seemed prudent to get few spares while we were there). Fairly sure the shop assistant thought I was mad.

(Maybe you'd like them. Square, burnt terracotta, random indentations)

Exactly those Ian, in a lighter colour. And yes, we'd do the same journey for the same purpose, undoubtedly. And buy a few extra for just in case.

As with many things, small independent tile shops who stock unusual/'unfashionable' tiles are largely a thing of the past.

Are these floor or wall tiles?

Wall tiles, but Ian was talking about floor tiles I think, and, at the beginning we needed some floor tiles we couldn't find, as Bodgit and Coverit only tiled around and just under the original kitchen units so there were lots of dusty concrete bits. Had we been able to find them, we'd have journeyed to find them. As we couldn't, we just put in generic tiles to fill the gaps and the new kitchen is pretty much on the old kitchen's footprint.

You can of course put floor tiles on the wall if you find suitable ones. Are there architectural scrap yards near you?

I have remembered where we saw good tiles when we were looking for bathroom tiles back in 2020. Today is another Hunt The Tile Day!

Sadly reclaim yards in the north are not what they are in the south! And most floor tiles these days are big enough to fill the gap between wall and base units!
