So batteries need incontinence pads.

Yes. I have several sets of string lights, and have had one or two of them taken out completely by leaking batteries, well within date, after only a few weeks. I keep eyeing rechargeables but have had a couple of chargers so far over a twenty-year period, and both died, as did the batteries, so not sure which is worse...

Tamsin - yes, exactly that. Much as I don't like Amazon, their 'Basics' rechargeable batteries and the charger made for them have lasted since early 2020. The metal charging pads need pulling out and back into their proper position with a pair of pliers occasionally, but they are all still working well and the batteries hold their charge for months.

At least one of my bantams regularly stays out late, so there's no point in an automatic door that's light-regulated. I don't know if it's just that they're individualistic or if it's the lowest in the pecking order - 18 girls at present in the henhouse, so there's certainly priority.
