Comments: Signs and the times

What a gorgeous view!

I miss not seeing the night sky. You just don't see much here in London. I grew up in the countryside and loved clear nights with all the stars.
I remember one holiday (many years ago) we went to Porthcurno in Cornwall. We arrived after dark and went out with torches to find the path to the beach. And saw shooting stars. Magic.

As if by magic, although it was totally overcast when I went to bed, at 2am it was almost clear, and by 2.30am totally clear so we saw the starts and the Milky Way for the first time in months.

I am trying to believe that that is a good omen.

But no meteors/shooting stars yet.

That's a lovely view, you don't often get sunsets like those in London - often there's too much light pollution.

I wonder why the signs specify the penalty won't exceed 40 shillings - does the penalty decrease if the angle of the gate opening is smaller? Does the penalty vary by local authority? etc

That's a lovely sunset! There aren't as many in London, often thanks to light pollution.

Looking at the sign, I'm curious as to why it specifies the penalty will not exceed 40 shillings. Are there any odd conditions surrounding the size of the fine you pay?

Hello and welcome 2a. Don't worry if your comment doesn't appear immediately - thanks to The Russians, any comments with any URLs go to spam, but I do regularly fish out the relevant ones in English!

All fines are 40 shillings, as far as I am concerned!!! But that is an interesting question. I dare you to ask it on the MWLT forums!

40/- was set by Section 23 of the Regulation of Railways Act 1868 - with the original version available to view on legislation.gov.uk. The law is still current, but the fine has been changed to the more boring "level 1 on the standard scale", which wouldn't make anywhere near as good a sign...
