I absolutely subscribe to your philosophy as outlined in your final sentence. We too have just replaced our conservatory roof with an insulated one and two Velux windows. It is plastered but not yet painted, but already makes an amazing difference to the space.

Tim - I toyed briefly with the idea of asking if anyone had experience of doing a top-hat conservatory project (as we discovered it is called) but decided it was highly unlikely, so this is very spooky!
Which system did you go with? And what size are the Veluxes? How long did it take? Any other tips?

Well, witches should be used to spooky things! We went with a Leka system, with two 600x900 Velux windows. The installation took four days (it's quite a big room), plus a day later for the plasterer.

Thanks Tim.
Our Summerhouse Museum is a Leka system building.
We tried to get them to quote for the conservatory top hat, but, unlike the summerhouses, which are made in the Welsh HQ, other buildings are made by approved companies, and the nearest to us (Liverpool - so not very near at all) seemed incapable of responding to requests for contact. We decided if the sales department was that bad, we didn't want to risk the rest!
