A Bank manifestly being stupid. It is, alas, still common.

They wanted to transfer "one million dollars" to you. "But first, could you just confirm your account number and sort code?"

I’m astonished, I thought banks had stopped this nonsense years ago. The last time this happened to me I asked them to write to me and I immediately hung up.

When Barclaycard phoned me, a few weeks ago, they were impeccably correct. They wanted to check some suspicious transactions, which weren't suspicious at all and caused me some nuisance with the ones that had renewed automatically, but the procedure was correct. I have had exactly the problem you describe from another bank, but not for years. And whenever I get an email from Lloyds, it starts with my name and assures me I will never be asked for any personal details on the phone.
